Grenada Teachers' Social Security & Welfare Association

About the GTSSWA

"Caring and Sharing with Dedication"

The idea to establish a Teacher’ Benevolent Fund was first mooted as early as the mid 1920’s by then Grenada Union of Teachers’ President Mr. J. F. Nurse.  Although he had support from members of the Executive and subsequent Executives it was not until March 1949 that some concrete action was taken when some nine teachers each paid the sum of $1000.00 towards the entrance fee of the Fund.

Another two years would pass before the Teacher’ Benevolent Fund would be launched, on July 7th 1951.  Thirty-two teachers signed up as foundation members.  Mr. C. E. Benjamin then president of the G. U. T was elected President.

Efforts to register the fund began at once and on 4th November 1952, notarial fees of $4.80 were paid for registration.  In 1959 the Assistant Administrator authorized the Treasury to deduct monthly subscription from teachers’ salary on behalf of the Association.

The Association held its first Association Day on July 7th 1960 and in that same year the Association commenced the sale of exercise books to the schools.  This was the forerunner the established of a bookshop in 1969 with Mr. R. O. Palmer as Chairman of the B. O. D and Mrs. Hilda Francis as Secretary/Manager.

Growth in the membership of the Association has continued through organized recruitment drives and individual members’ initiatives.  Today membership stands at 609 members.  Benefits too have increased significantly and as members’ proposals are made new benefits have been adopted.

The Grenada Teachers’ Social Security & Welfare Association is a unique Organization, which caters for every need of its member with great emphasis on their social welfare.  The Organization takes pride in its motto: “Caring and Sharing with Dedication” and is ever seeking for new and improved means of reaching out to all its members.
